Researching family history often includes searches on the internet. The following is a list of SEARCH OPERATORS that you may find useful.

Quotation Marks - for an exact match.

• Searching for John Jones birth try "John Jones" birth, or "Jones, John" birth
• Will only display pages that contain the quoted string

Minus Sign - to exclude.

• If searching for John Jones birth returns results for John Andrew Jones try John Jones -Andrew
• Will only display pages that do not include Andrew

Site Specific.

• To search only a specific site try site:dwyne.net John Jones
• Will search only the site dwyne.net for John Jones

Web Page - Titles only.

• To search in web page titles only Try allintitle: John Jones
• This will only show pages that contain John AND Jones in the webpage title.

Web Page - Text only.

• To search in web page text only Try allintext: John Jones
• This will only show pages that contain John AND Jones in the webpage text.

Range of numbers.

• To search using a number/date range try John Jones birth 1942..1946
• This will only show pages that contain John Jones AND a number range between 1942 and 1946.
• (note the 2 periods )

Proximity or (Near Each Other).

• To search for terms near each other try John Jones AROUND(5) Anglesey.
• Only show pages where Anglesey is within 5 words of John Jones.

Logical - AND

• To search for John Jones birth and marriage try John Jones birth AND marriage
• AND will only display a page if BOTH of the arguments are true/found.

Logical - OR

• To search for John Jones birth or marriage try John Jones birth OR marriage
• OR will only display a page if ANY/either of the arguments are true/found.
